STOP SMOKING ALL YEAR ROUND

Just because January is over does not mean you can abandon that resolution and start smoking again. If the common patches, gum, sticks or cold turkey doesn’t work for you, then why not try our top three alternative therapies.

1)       Hypnotherapy: Stop smoking hypnotherapists use the power of suggestion to stop your cravings; Leeds Headrow based Julie at “Break The Habit” boasts a 95% success rate with her unique techniques.

2)       Ginseng: A herbal tablet, available easily from your local pharmacy which is proven to stop the release of dopamine; the chemical that your brain release when you smoke that makes you feel good- a major part of the addiction process.

3)       Acupuncture: This method of sticking tiny pins into your pressure points is tailored in order to turn smoking into a non-pleasurable experience. The treatment focuses on getting your Liver back to full working system as if you smoke your Liver has become used to the stimulation of the tobacco that is usually in your circulation, and this has substituted a part of your Liver’s own energy, so that your Liver now has less energy. When the Liver has less energy it gives you that anxious feeling that is only satisfied with a cigarette.

IF THE CAP FITS…

Rappers have been doing it for years, but it seems as if “tooth capping” is the newest trend to hit Hollywood.  Singer Ke$ha was seen sporting a gold cap last year and it seems that the 25 year old singing sensation, Lana Del Ray is following suit with a  glittery cap as she visited LA earlier this week.

Del Ray has been slated for stealing the trend off Ke$ha with pressure building on the singer to find an unique look in a market saturated with flamboyant dressers like Katy Perry, Jessie J and the queen of quirky Lady Gaga.

Gold caps; if fitted permanently will last around 15 years, but if you are not willing to take the plunge then look online or in your local fancy dress shop for fake gold teeth.

RISE IN TUMMY-TUCK SURGERY FOR ...

More than 43,000 people underwent cosmetic operations last year, according to annual statistics from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS).

The figures show that the number of procedures increased by nearly six per cent, similar to rises in 2009 and 2010.

The biggest rise in demand was for male “tummy tucks”, or an abdominoplasty, which showed an annual increase of 15 per cent.

For the first time, the annual audit included fat transfer procedures – where fat is taken from one part of the body and injected elsewhere, mainly into the face to restore volume.

In total, women underwent 38,771 procedures, up from 34,413, an increase of 12.7 per cent.

This was in line with demand for male surgery which increased by seven per cent to 4,298 from 4,017.

Male procedures accounted for 10 per cent of all cosmetic surgery. Breast enhancement surgery maintained a slow but constant growth of 6.2 per cent from 9,418 to 10,003 in 2011 and continues to be the most popular procedure.

The operation kept its place as the second most common procedure for men, rising by seven per cent from 741 to 790.

“Tummy tucks” proved increasingly popular with men and women alike, with a rise of seven per cent from 3,039 to 3,251 in women and a 15 per cent increase in male demand from 108 to 124. Fat transfer procedures were up five per cent for both sexes, ranking the eighth most popular procedure among women and the sixth most popular for men.

Fazel Fatah, a consultant plastic surgeon and president of BAAPS, said: “It is understandable that procedures for the more noticeable areas of the face and body – such as breast augmentation, rhinoplasty [nose jobs] and eyelid surgery – continue to prove popular when patients are looking to get the most ‘impact’ from their surgery to enhance their mental well-being and self-confidence.

“It is also not surprising to note a considerable rise in treatments such as tummy tucks and liposuction when there has been an increase in people undergoing obesity treatment such as gastric bands.

“These patients are usually left with a lot of loose skin that causes physical problems and unsightly body contour which can only be addressed by surgery.”

Rajiv Grover, a consultant plastic surgeon and president elect of BAAPS, said: “The continued popularity of aesthetic plastic surgery, even through financially difficult times, demonstrates that the public sees real value in the psychological and physical improvement that can be achieved.

“Advances in techniques have also meant it’s harder to ‘tell’ if someone has undergone a procedure – they may just look well-rested, or refreshed.

“Whether because of the recent implant scare or a backlash against some ‘lunchtime’ non-surgical treatments that don’t deliver what they promise, it is reassuring that patients are doing their homework, evaluating criteria other than just price, and choosing BAAPS surgeons.”

HAIR GEL BAN FOR LEEDS SCHOOL ...

A Leeds schoolboy was removed from his class for two weeks…. because his spiky, gelled hair did not meet uniform standards.

Adam Saville, 11, was only allowed to return to his year seven class at Pudsey Grangefield when he agreed to flatten his inch-high hair.

Now his mother Kerry has vowed to take the matter to the school’s board of Governors, claiming it is trying to turn children into “clones” and acting “more like the army than a school”.

Issues arose a fortnight ago when Adam was ordered by his teachers to flatten his spiked hair. After refusing – with his family’s backing – he was put in isolation.

He spent most of the next fortnight in and out of ‘isolation’.

The school’s dress code does not refer to spiked hair, but stresses “hair should be clean and well-groomed.” Ten listed examples of “inappropriate” dress include “hair dyed in unnatural colours or cut in extreme styles”.

“It’s not an extreme haircut but they are calling it extreme,” Mrs Saville, from Bramley, said.

“It’s worn by nearly every lad walking down the street. If he had a six-inch mohican or a load of shapes shaved into his head, we would support the school. But it was stuck up one inch.

She has now agreed to let Adam flatten his hair and return to his class. But she insisted: “His hair has not affected his education, but the school’s attitude has. Adam is a good student,” she added.

“This is the only bit of his personality he is allowed to show. They are taking his individuality away.”

Ken Cornforth, headteacher said: “There are bound to be occasions when views of parents differ from that of the school. In this case a school’s representative met with parents. Following the meeting, the pupil is now back in normal lessons and their hair meets the standards of our school dress code.”
